Funeral services for Edna Ruth Daniel Scott will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016, 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, Mound Bayou, with Pastor Earl V. Hall officiating. 

Burial will follow in the Scott Family Cemetery, Drew. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m., on Friday, June 3, 2016, at W.S. Brandon Mortuary, Cleveland, and the family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Mound Bayou.

William Haynes Jr.

William Haynes Jr., 80, of Cleveland died Thursday, May 26, 2016, at his home. 

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Riverside United Baptist Church in Rosedale with Rev. Emanuel Boone officiating.

Tommie Morris

 

Services for Tommie Simpson Morris were held Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Friendship West Baptist Church in Friendship. 

Mrs. Morris, 82, died on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at her home in Drew. She was born on November 1, 1933, in Friendship, to the late Morris and Annie Higginbottom Simpson and lived in Drew.

Beth Mortimer Brister

 

Funeral services for Beth Mortimer Brister were at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at Kilmichael Baptist Church. 

Burial followed in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery near Kilmichael. Rev. Gary Jackson officiated the services.

A large fire in Mound Bayou on Saturday caused several volunteer fire department districts to respond to 303 Lafayette Ave. 

According to Mound Bayou Fire Chief Edgar Glover, "No one was hurt, thank God. The family managed to get out and we did have some people who were already out in the neighborhood. One person who saw the fire was a firefighter and so he radioed in."

After patrolling the roads for Memorial Day Weekend the Mississippi Highway Patrol has released the holiday totals. Troop D, which encompasses the Delta, including Bolivar County, issued 20 DUIs and one drug arrest. 

D also had 605 hazard tickets, which range from speeding tickets to reckless driving, and 312 non-hazard tickets, which range from not having a driver's license to not having insurance.

Actors sought for historic production

Actor Tom Moses will end his time in Mound Bayou this weekend as he continues his search for actors to be in the play "Before the Dream." 

"It’s a play based on black history. We are doing this play in relationship to the town of Mound Bayou. It has something to do with the project they are doing and this play will allow them to raise some local funds," he said.

School board votes to challenge court ruling

Nearly a year after a federal court hearing, the Cleveland School District received notice late Friday that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi ordered the district to consolidate its secondary schools. 

The Cleveland School District Board of Trustees had a special called meeting Monday night to discuss their options. 

According to Jamie Jacks, board attorney, the board unanimously voted to explore their options.

"They authorized counsel to investigate an appeal," said Jacks.
