The Delta State University Statesmen had a great season on the baseball diamond in 2017.
They went 45-13, won the Gulf South Conference Title, the South Region Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series.
DSU run last year didn’t go unnoticed. In fact, expectations for DSU will be even higher. The Statesmen are preseason ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Preseason Poll.
The Statesmen have starters returning in the line-up but will have to replace five seniors in the pitching rotation. Four of those seniors combined for 26 wins and nine saves.
“It’s a great honor for our program, but we know it’s based off what we did last year,” Delta State head baseball coach Mike Kinnison said. “We’ve got a good nucleus coming back, but we have to basically rebuild our pitching staff. We return (Seth) Birdsong and Peyton White, but you go beyond that we really don’t have much returning. It’s going to be new guys and developing that. We know it’s quite a bullseye, but if anyone has to have it, it might as well be us.”
DSU will open its season on the road Feb. 2 against Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
