DSU men 68, Lee 58
The Delta State University Statesmen were up to the challenge in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament as they defeated the Lee University Flames Tuesday in Cleveland, Tenn.
DSU improved to 14-15, while Lee fell to 16-12.
The Statesmen outscored the Flames 46-28 in the second half, shooting 65.2 percent (15-of-23) in the second. The Statesmen ended up shot 51 percent (25-of-49) for the game and 92.9 percent (13-of-14) at the free throw line.
Brett Warner scored 24 points, Matt Wilson scored 19 points with four assists and three steals and Armon Benford with 14 points, five steals and four rebounds.
DSU will play Valdosta State in the semifinals of the GSC Tournament Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala. If the Statesmen win, they'll play in the championship game Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Union women 74, DSU 58
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen saw their season come to an end as they lost to the Union University Lady Bulldogs in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament Tuesday in Jackson, Tenn.
DSU ended its season at 12-15, while Union improved to 26-3 and will play Lee at 12 p.m. in the semifinals at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
Takisha Jordan scored 20 points with nine rebounds and two blocks to lead DSU, followed by Alondrea Rush with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists.
DSU finished with its first losing season since the 1982-83 year.
