Statesmen down Harding

The fifth ranked Delta State University Statesmen scored six runs in the top of the sixth to defeat the Harding Bisons Tuesday night in Searcy, Ark.

The Statesmen improved to 29-6, while Harding fell to 20-19.

Zack Shannon continued his great work at the plate by drilling his 23rd home run of the season to go with a double. He finished with two RBIs and now has 70 in just 35 games. Shannon's 23rd home run is the second most in a season in DSU history and three home runs behind the single season mark of 26 set by Dee Haynes in 1999. He now has 42 bombs for a career, which puts him second on the school's all-time list. Shannon has been also named to mid-season watch list for the Golden Spikes Award.

Jason Popovich and Emil Ellis aided DSU as they each drilled two hits including a double with two RBIs, followed by Clay Casey and Justin Nussbaum with two hits, a RBI and a run scored each and Juwan Burney with two hits and a run scored.

Tyler Walton (6-0) earned the win in relief as he gave up an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout and no walks in two innings of work. Freshman pitcher and former Cleveland High School and Hernando High School standout Hunter Riggins threw two shutout innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Riggins has only given up one run in his last six appearances (10.2 IP). On Tuesday, Riggins was named GSC Freshman of the Week, while Shannon was named Player of the Week.

DSU will be back in action this weekend when the Statesmen host Lee University in a three-game Gulf South Conference series. The series will start Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and will conclude Sunday with a single game at 2 p.m.
