Cleveland 10s finish second at state

Borganelli

With their backs against the wall in the championship round of the Dixie Youth AAA State Baseball Tournament in St. Martin Tuesday, the Cleveland 10-year-old All-Stars had to defeat the Columbia All-Stars twice to win the state championship and advance to the Dixie Youth AAA World Series in Lumberton, N.C.

Cleveland won the first game of the day 10-5 but had a tough time in the next game as Columbia won 13-1 to win the AAA State Championship and earn the World Series bid.

Cleveland finished 4-2 in the tournament. The championship round was supposed to be played on Monday but inclement weather pushed the final round to Tuesday.

In the early game Tuesday, Cleveland had its big inning in the top of the fifth. With the score tied 3-3, Ryan Mallette drilled a two-run single, Aiden Borganelli socked a RBI-single, Mitchell Jones nailed a two-run single and John Everette Still spanked a two-run single to give Cleveland a 10-3 lead. Columbia scored two more in the bottom of the fifth but Cleveland held on for the win.

Pitching wise for Cleveland, Christian McKinney started the game and gave up three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in a 55-pitch effort over 3 1/3 innings of work. Borganelli surrendered two runs on two hits with two walks in a 20-pitch effort, one inning outing and Kellen Allen did a great job closing the door on Columbia by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. He walked one with no strikeouts in a 27-pitch effort. Allen also tagged a double, drove in a run and scored twice at the plate.

Borganelli tagged two hits, drove in a run and scored twice to lead Cleveland, followed by Landon Williams and McKinney with two hits and a run each and Still with a hit and three RBIs.

In the final game, Columbia had a huge second inning by scoring 13 runs to take a 13-0 lead. Cleveland scored a run in the fourth but that was the only offense Cleveland could muster.

Borganelli drilled both of Cleveland's hits and drove in the team's only run. Mallette, Borganelli and Barrett Bramlett pitched for Cleveland. Bramlett had the best performance as he tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of work.
