Shannon swinging hot bat for Missoula Featured

Former Delta State University baseball standout Zack Shannon continues to impress.

Shannon, who finished his career at DSU this spring by hitting a state collegiate record 31 home runs with a school-record 93 RBIs to go with a .406 batting average, has made his presence felt in the Pioneer League by hitting .336 in his first 38 games with the Missoula Osprey, a rookie league affiliate in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

Shannon has hit safely in 20 of his last 24 games and had a 10-game hitting streak at one point in the season. Shannon has 14 multi-hit games.

He currently leads the league in slugging percentage (.619). He is second in OPS (1.060), tied for fourth in home runs (8), tied for seventh in doubles (12), eighth in batting average, eighth in on-base percentage (.426) and tied for 11th in RBIs (31). He has also scored 33 runs and has 45 hits.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Shannon in the 15th round of this year's Major League Baseball Draft. Shannon played at DSU in 2017 and 18 and was a C Spire Ferriss Trophy Finalist in both years and named National Player of the Year by NCBWA and D2CCA two years in a row, won the Tino Martinez Award in 2017 and a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist this year.

In Double-A, former DSU player Trent Giambrone has continued to maintain his good work for the Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League. Giambrone has hit 16 home runs with 45 RBIs, 20 doubles, 22 stolen bases and 47 runs scored in 97 games. He is currently hitting .257 with 87 hits in 339 at-bats. Giambrone is fourth in the Southern League in stolen bases and tied for fifth in home runs.

Tennessee is an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs organization. Giambrone played at DSU in 2015 and 16. Giambrone was selected in the 25th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs.

Former DSU pitcher Dalton Moats has had his share of ups and downs this season for the Montgomery Biscuits in the Southern League. Moats is currently 2-3 with a 5.19 ERA in the 35 appearances. He has given up 49 hits with 22 walks and 56 strikeouts in 52 innings of work. The league is hitting just .244 against him. Moats is seventh in the Southern League in appearances.

The Biscuits are the Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Moats was drafted in the 15th round of the MLB Draft by Tampa Bay in 2016. Moats pitched at DSU in 2016.
